The Provincial Officer for the Province of Victoria, Bishop Andrew Curnow has announced that the Provincial Emergency Relief Fund (PEF) managed by the Diocese of Melbourne, has made emergency relief grants to the bush fire affected dioceses of Gippsland and Wangaratta and Gippsland of $25,000 each.
This was one of the immediate outcomes of a special Victorian Provincial Bishops’ meeting held in Melbourne on Monday morning. The meeting was chaired by the Acting Metropolitan, Bishop Garry Weatherill, and Bishop of Ballarat.
Bishop Curnow in making the announcement was also pleased to report that the payments have already been made to the affected dioceses to assist them immediately as part of the recovery operation now underway. The bishops also discussed some long term initiatives to help dioceses managing disasters in the future.
A range of practical initiatives to help Gippsland and Wangaratta were also decided and these will be announced in coming days.
